How the Hijri calendar works
The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar with twelve months of 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year is about 354 or 355 days, roughly 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan and other Islamic occasions move earlier through the seasons each year.
This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, which is calculated in advance and used for civil purposes in Saudi Arabia. Your browser supplies the calculation, so no data is downloaded.
Worked example
If today is 13 October 2026 in the Gregorian calendar, the tool shows the matching Hijri day, month name and year. To check a family date, type the Hijri day, choose the month and enter the year to see the Gregorian date and weekday.
Important to know
- Religious observances such as the start of Ramadan or the dates of Eid often depend on local moon sighting and the announcement of local authorities. They can differ by a day from a calculated calendar. For worship, follow your local announcement.
- Gulf government dates are calculated in advance, but when a month begins can be adjusted by official decisions.
- The calendar supports Hijri years 1300 to 1600.
