Kerala land units: cent, acre, square feet and more
How cent, are, acre, square feet, square metres and hectare relate, with examples.
Property listings and land records in Kerala use a mixture of units. Knowing the main ones avoids confusion when you compare plots.
| Unit | In square metres | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cent | about 40.47 | 1/100 of an acre |
| 1 acre | about 4,046.86 | 100 cents, about 43,560 sq ft |
| 1 are | 100 | a metric unit |
| 1 hectare | 10,000 | 100 ares, about 2.47 acres |
| 1 sq ft | about 0.0929 | so 1 cent is about 435.6 sq ft |
Quick examples
- A 5-cent plot is about 202 square metres or about 2,178 square feet.
- Ten cents is about 4,356 square feet, roughly a tenth of an acre.
- One acre is 100 cents.
Plot area vs built-up area
Land is measured in cents, whereas houses are measured in square feet of built-up area. A 1,500 sq ft house on a 5-cent plot covers about 69 percent of the plot, which may exceed local setback rules. Do not confuse the two numbers when reading an advertisement.
Before you buy
- Check the area in the title documents and the survey sketch, not only the advertisement.
- Ask for the area in both cents and square feet and verify that the numbers agree.
- Consult a local professional for legal checks; this guide only explains units.
