A fair way to split rent and bills in a shared flat

Equal split, split by share, and handling one-off expenses so nobody feels cheated.

Shared rooms and flats are common across the Gulf. Money arguments rarely come from big sums; they come from unclear rules. Agreeing a method early saves friendships.

Method 1: Equal split

Everyone pays the same amount. It works when rooms and usage are similar. Total ÷ number of people. A monthly bill of 2,400 for four people is 600 each.

Method 2: Split by share

When one person has the bigger room, the private bathroom or stays only part of the month, assign shares. If one person has a share of 2 and the others have 1 each in a three-person flat, the total is 4 shares: 50 percent, 25 percent, 25 percent.

Method 3: Split by use

For utilities like electricity you can split by months of stay or sub-meter readings. For groceries, record who bought what and settle at the end of the month.

Settling up with fewest payments

If three people each paid different amounts, don’t make every pair pay each other. Work out each person’s balance (paid minus fair share) and let those who owe pay those who are owed. The expense splitter does this automatically.

House rules that help

  1. Write the monthly shares in a shared message.
  2. Keep one person responsible for paying the landlord, with others sending their part by a set date.
  3. Agree how to treat guests, a person leaving mid-month and the security deposit.
  4. Photograph receipts for shared purchases.

For air conditioning bills, the electricity cost calculator can show roughly how much of the bill each appliance causes, which makes it easier to agree a fair division.
