Trip fuel cost calculator
Enter the distance, your car’s fuel economy and the fuel price. See the litres needed, the cost, and each person’s share when you travel together.
How the cost is worked out
If your fuel economy is in kilometres per litre, litres needed equals distance divided by economy. If it is in litres per 100 km, litres needed equals distance times economy divided by 100. Multiply the litres by the price per litre to get the fuel cost, then add tolls and parking. Divide by the number of people to see each share.
Worked example
A 150 km trip each way is 300 km round trip. A car that does 12 km per litre needs 25 litres. At 2.80 per litre the fuel costs 70. With 10 for tolls and parking the total is 80, which is 20 each for four people.
Good to know
- Real economy changes with speed, air conditioning, load and traffic. Use the figure from your recent fill-ups for the best estimate.
- Many cars show a litres per 100 km figure on the dashboard. Choose that unit if so.
- Leave a margin of 10 to 15 percent for detours and heavy traffic.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my car’s fuel economy?
Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then refill. Divide the kilometres driven by the litres added.
Does the tool include car wear and tear?
No. It covers fuel plus whatever you enter as tolls and parking.
How do I convert between km per litre and litres per 100 km?
Divide 100 by one number to get the other. 12 km per litre is about 8.3 litres per 100 km.
