Shared room expense splitter

Add the people, add the bills, and see what each person owes. Use shares when one person occupies a bigger part of the room or when a couple lives together.

People

Give each person a number of shares. An equal split is 1 share each; a couple sharing one bed space can be 2.

Expenses for the month

How the split works

Every expense is added together into one total. Each person pays their number of shares divided by the total shares, multiplied by the total. With three people on one share each, everyone pays a third. If one person has two shares, that person pays half and the other two pay a quarter each.

Worked example

Three flatmates share a 2,400 rent, 360 for electricity and water, and 150 for internet, a 2,910 total. On equal shares each pays 970. If one of them is a couple with 2 shares, the total shares are 4: the couple pays 1,455 and the other two pay 727.50 each.

Good to know

  • Agree the method before the month starts. The guide to splitting rent and bills fairly compares equal, per-room and usage-based splits.
  • Use the copy button to paste the summary into your group chat. It keeps a clear record of who owes what.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split unevenly?

Change the shares. For example, a bigger room could be 1.5 shares and a smaller one 1 share.

Does the tool track who paid the landlord?

No. It only works out each person’s share. Settle with whoever paid the bill.

Can I add more people or expenses?

Yes. Use the add buttons. You can remove a row with the × button.
