WhatsApp click-to-chat links: how they work
Create a link that opens a chat with a number, with or without a pre-filled message, and why the country code matters.
A click-to-chat link opens a WhatsApp conversation with a phone number without needing to save that number as a contact. It is handy for shops, small businesses and anyone who shares a number often.
The link format
https://wa.me/<number> where the number is written in full international format: country code and number, with no plus sign, spaces, dashes or leading zeros. For example, an Indian mobile number 98765 43210 becomes 919876543210, and a UAE number 50 123 4567 becomes 971501234567.
Adding a message
Add ?text= followed by your message, with spaces written as %20. “Hello, I saw your ad” becomes Hello%20I%20saw%20your%20ad. The generator does this encoding for you.
Common country codes
| Country | Code |
|---|---|
| India | 91 |
| UAE | 971 |
| Saudi Arabia | 966 |
| Qatar | 974 |
| Kuwait | 965 |
| Oman | 968 |
| Bahrain | 973 |
Good practice
- Only share links to numbers you own or have permission to share.
- Do not use links to send unsolicited bulk messages; this breaks WhatsApp’s rules and can get a number blocked.
- Test the link on your own phone before printing it on a card or poster.
